First Day!
Rules and Expectations
Shull Middle School Art ProgramMrs. Johnston
Students will have Art twice a week for two marking periods this year. During art class students will work hard to express their ideas through art making, learn about other artists, and increase their vocabulary and understanding of art through discussions. Students will learn new drawing, painting, and sculpture skills, as well as much more! The projects students complete will be exciting and fun, while teaching them the basic art skills necessary to be visually literate. Students will be expected to work to the best of their ability in a neat and disciplined manner..
REQUIRED art materials:
• No. 2 Pencils necessary for every class
Failure to come to class prepared with a pencil will result in an automatic lunch detention, no exceptions!!!
Basic Art Rules:
1) Respect Your Teacher – Follow directions and do not talk during instruction or without permission.
2) Respect Each Other - No putdowns, foul language (bad words!), bullying, or name calling. Share only positive and respectful opinions about other students and teachers.
3) Respect All Artwork - Treat your work & the work of others with care and kindness. Have PRIDE in your creations and never throw away artwork.
4) Respect Our Classroom - Clean up after yourself and then help others until the job is DONE, and treat art materials as if they are your own
5) Respect Yourself - ALWAYS TRY YOUR BEST! Come to class with a pencil and a positive, open-minded attitude. Have confidence in yourself and never give up.
School rules will also be enforced in the art classroom. Students are expected to come to class prepared with a pencil, ON TIME, keep their hands to themselves, and make responsible choices. Art class, while fun and exciting, is a time for creating art work and not socializing. Students who misbehave, waste time, or distract others will have consequences!
Behavior Management Plan:
Level 1 = Verbal warning (after two warnings in one class period, move to the next level)
Level 2 = One or more of the following: “Time-out” at an isolated table, seat change, hallway conference/private chat with teacher. (If behavior does not improve, move to next level)
Level 3 = The THREE C’S: Contract, Consequence (ex: lunch detention, Think About It, etc.) and Call home to parents. (If behavior does not improve, move to next level)
Level 4 = Team intervention. (If behavior does not improve, involve administration).
*Note – Students will be IMMEDIATELY removed from class and sent to the Principal or VP for all serious offenses OR if Behavior Management Plan (above) has been exhausted and the student is not improving their behavior!
Rewards: Positive class behavior will be rewarded with music, an art game, or “choice seating.” Positive individual behavior, exceptional skill, effort, and attitude will be rewarded with award certificates and recognition, and the opportunity to have art displayed in art shows around the county.
Class Routines and Norms
Clean-up Procedures: All students must help their table members clean up (this means helping neighbors clean as well!) Each table will be held accountable for the overall cleanliness of their space and students will not be dismissed from class until their space is clean, their artwork has been properly stored, and their Table is clean.
Storing Art Work and Supplies: Students will be asked to keep an art portfolio during the time they spend in class, and this portfolio will remain at school until the end of the semester or year, where it can be accessed for art displays and shows. In addition, 8th grade students will be asked to keep their sketchbooks at school at all times. Students will make up any missed sketchbook work on computer paper, which will be attached to the sketchbook at school.
Restroom and Clinic Use: Students may ask to use the restroom or clinic ONLY AFTER instruction and demonstration time. Acceptable use will be short and will not become a habit. Students must sign IN and OUT on the “Sign Out” sheet. They should include the date and time they leave and return to class. However, if a student abuses this privilege, they may be denied the opportunity to go. *NOTE: If it is an emergency (ex: feeling faint, need to vomit, etc.) students should not be afraid to interrupt their teacher if necessary and ask to see the nurse.
Grading: At the end of the nine week quarter, students will receive a numerical art grade. Grades will be based on roughly 3-5 in-depth class projects (each worth 100 points) as well as in-class activities, sketches, quizzes, and written art critiques. All projects will be assessed using rubrics and these rubrics will be reviewed in class and posted on the class bulletin board. In-class activities (such as warm ups and vocabulary definitions) will be given points based on their completion.
Making up Work: Absent students may have extra days to complete work based on the amount of days missed, but missed work must be completed during resource or at home. In cases of long term absence, the art teacher will work with students individually to create a realistic plan for supplemented work to be done outside of class.
The Shull Middle School art teachers believe in ALL of their students and will nurture and guide them in the improvement of their skills. However, the growth of each student also depends on the amount of effort and practice he or she puts into the class, and therefore it is our hope that students will try their best each and every day!
