This is what it has all come down to: how do we solve any quadratic, regardless of whether or not it is factorable or if it can be solved by square roots?

Within that quadratic equation is a piece called the discriminant: b2 - 4ac

If b2 - 4ac < 0, the roots are one pair of complex conjugates
If b2 - 4ac = 0, there is one real root
If b2 - 4ac > 0, there are two real roots
