Course Objectives:


1. Focus on the elements and principles of design in every piece of artwork.
2. Learn the importance of keeping a sketchbook as an artist.
3. Focus on creating interesting and eye catching compositions utilizing the elements and principles of design.
4. Hanging AT LEAST one piece in both the winter and spring art shows.

Syllabus



Homework
For the first semester you will be responsible for creating one Artist Trading Card (ATC) per week – for each element and principle of design. It will be your responsibility to research that particular element or principle and create a card showing examples and listing its properties.

Elements: line, shape, value, color, space and texture
Principles: contrast, emphasis, movement, balance, scale and pattern

The second semester you will each be creating a journal with a particular theme that you choose. You will design the cover and the first two pages. After that it will be passed around to each class member, and they will be responsible for filling two pages as they view that particular theme.

First Quarter Responsibilities
Weeks 1-2 (September)

Weeks 3-4 (September)
- Cubism Photomontage
- Create a space ATC
- Create a scale ATC

Weeks 5-6 (October)
- Contour Lines with Pattern Fill
- Create Pattern ATC
- Create Emphasis ATC

Weeks 7-10 (October)
- Camouflage Color Paintings
- Create Color ATC
- Create Value ATC

Second Quarter Responsibilities
Weeks 11-13 (November)
- Simplification Triptych
- Create Shape ATC

Weeks 14-17 (December)
- Pop Art Prints
- Create Balance ATC
- Create Contrast ATC
- Prepare for Winter Art Show

Weeks 18-20 (January)
- Abstract Expressionism Collage
- Create Movement ATC
- Create Texture ATC
- Complete Midterms

Third Quarter Responsibilities
Weeks 21-23 (February)
- Begin Circle Journal – cover and first two pages
- Trade and do two pages in a peer’s journal

Weeks 24-26 (March)
- Drawing with Cutouts
- 2 pages in another peer’s journal
- 2 pages in another peer’s journal
- trip to the MoMa

Weeks 27-29 (April)
- Abstraction Review – Road Map Relief
- 2 pages in another peer’s journal
- 2 pages in another peer’s journal

Quarter Four Responsibilities
- Batik
- Free Choice Project
- Continue creating 2 pages per week in peers’ journals
- Get work ready for Spring Art Show
