E. Types of Beginnings

1. Anecdote-brief narrative drawn from current events.
a. a memory
b. In story form

2.Analogy and Comparison-
a. makes the reader contemplate
b. comparing two different situations or words
c. "Emptiness is like a dark room"

3. Dialogue/Quotation
a. Dialogue-two people conversing.
1. Good to focus on a certain subject or fact
b. Quotation-Repeating something someone said.

4. Facts and Statistics
a. # of people travel overseas for vacation.

5. Irony or Humor
a. Irony-when you say something, but mean something else
1. "I was a popular kid in school, therefore I was hated by everyone"
b. humor-something funny
1. "Kids should never be put on a leash"

6. Short Generalization-short description
a. Example: Zozobra is an old tradition in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Zozobra is the burning of past troubles, and the the start of new beginnings. we dance to the music of our past generations. We smell the sweet smells of Frito pie and funnel cakes as we sip out lemonade. We yell "Burn him!" as the fireworks go off. The fire dancers dance. The fire fades to black and the crowd gets silent and all go home.

7. Startling claim-Strong opinion or statement
a. Example: Some people are quiet and shy, which some people are loud and happy. However, the happy people are all miserable in their own way.

8. Strong proposition-Opinion about a specific topic and a recommendation on how to fix it.

9. Rhetorical question-A question that requires no answer.
