Using the Past Simple
Use the past simple to convey ( express an idea) that some situation or event finished before now, and is not real or true as you're speaking. Something that happened once in the past, and at a very precise moment then.
You usually need a past time expression to emphasize the PAST SITUATION status of the event. You need to locate the event somewhere along the past timeline.
Example
I was home yesterday at 8.
I was home when you called me.
In the last above, "when you called me" is used as a time expression of the past, to give the event a special place in time.
I studied at the French School.
In this case I'm letting you know that I already finished school, that now I'm doing something else and that French School is part of my past, having no relation to what I currently do.
