5-Paragraph Essay: Step 6: Conclusion Paragraph

At last, a Conclusion

This is easy! The frosting on the cake.

The order of the conclusion paragraph is:
Conclusion: Thesis. Summary. Connection. (chuck tomatoes, serve cake)

It's basically done for you. This is the last paragraph and it starts right after your body paragraphs.

Sentence 1: Thesis:

First prepare a modified thesis:

Thesis: Abe Lincoln is a special person to study.

...becomes:

In conclusion, Abe Lincoln is a special man to study.

Write it down as sentence 1.

Sentence 2: Summary:

Great. Prepare your tree map topics.

Topic 1: He made slavery illegal.
Topic 2: He helped end the civil war.
Topic 3: He was a great American President.

And put them into a single sentence like this:

Topic 1: He made slavery illegal, Topic 2: he helped end the Civil War, and Topic 3: he was a great American President.

Write that down as your next sentence, so your conclusion paragraph looks like this so far:

In conclusion, Abe Lincoln is a special man to study. He made slavery illegal, he helped end the Civil War, and he was a great American President.

Sentence 3+: Connection to Reader:

Good! One last sentence (or three) and your essay is done. Are you witty? Now's your time to show it. The last thing you need is a connection to the reader.

Try to connect what you've talked about in your essay to something the reader sees everyday.

Here's some good examples
Good Connection: You will remember his accomplishments every time you use cash. His face is memorialized on the copper American penny.
Good Connection: You may enjoy each day in America, free from slavery, because of Abraham Lincoln.
Good Connection: Next time you see a penny, notice it shows the face of Abe Lincoln, the man who saved our nation from slavery.

And write your connection at the end of your paragraph. Here's my finished paragraph:

In conclusion, Abe Lincoln is a special man to study. He made slavery illegal, he helped end the Civil War, and he was a great American President. Next time you see a penny, notice it shows the face of Abe Lincoln, the man who saved our nation from slavery.

That's it! Your conclusion sentence is done. Your essay is almost done! The last thing you do is: Scan for errors.

Proceed to step 7 to scan for errors, or else go back to the 5-paragraph essay overview.

More Connection Ideas

If your thesis is about the unexpected:
1. The next time you find yourself in a tough unexpected situation, remember that soon things will turn out better than you think.
2. When you see somebody who is going through a teen pregnancy, remember to tell them that soon everything will work out better than they expect.
3. Don't be afraid to visit Mexico. If you think it will be boring, then you will be very surprised at how wonderful it really is.
