Aim: Understanding organizing and rough cut time lines in Final Cut Express
Continuing on from yesterday:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/#organizing-your-clips
i. Those of you unable to import to FCE, you should have imported to iMovie yesterday. Follow these instructions to get your clips and timeline to FCE
-If you have anything in your iMovie Timeline:
A. Go to "Share" and click "Export Final Cut XML" and save as your video's name and the scene
you have edited together so far. Save in your created folder for your project
B. Open FCE, go to "File" click "Import" and select "Final Cut XML..."
-If you only have imported raw footage, go directly to FCE, click on Import files, and import all of your files from your video
our sequence will appear in the browser. Double click it to appear in the timeline and canvas
1. Create Bins for each scene and put clips into correct bin
5. If you have already edited work in iMovie,
6. FCP language:
1. Viewer: Shows source clip (from the browser)
2. Canvas: Shows edited sequence (in your timeline)
3. Scrubbing: running back and forth across the timeline using the playhead "To play through an audio or video clip interactively (under manual control) to evaluate it or locate a specific event"
NOW! Creating your rough cut:
1. Play your clips in the viewer from your browser
2. Mark in and out points with i and o (the in and out points will be marked with an arrow and a blue line
3. Two options:
1. Drag clip into canvas (will be dropped where your playhead is)
2. Drag clip into timeline (will be dropped where you place it)
4. What do you want to do with the clips?
1. Insert: puts clip where playhead is. If this is in the middle of another clip, it will split the clip at the playhead and that clip will continue after your inserted clip
2. Overwrite: Replaces clip in the timeline at the playhead
3. Replace: Replaces clip in the timeline for the same duration
4. Fit to Fill: Insert in a hole in your timeline and fits the duration
5. Superimpose: Overlay each other--superimposed one on top of the other
Today, create your rough cuts. Tomorrow, we will learn trimming and transitions

Aim: Using feedback from our peers to make our work better
Daily Spark: What was your favorite scene to film or edit in this project. Why?
We will screen today, you will give feedback on sticky notes. Save these because this project is not done yet!
12/13/10-12/17/10: Finish Editing
12/13/10Zamore: FP3
Aim: Understanding trimming and ripple edit
Now you should have your work in rough cut form, we will look at trimming options and transitions
http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/#trimming
Razor blade--cuts video at exact point you click on, splitting the clip in two
Ripple tool - single circle with tail - Lengthen or shorten a clip--all clips around it adjust to insure no gap in sequence - only edits one direction--tail lets you know which clip it will adjust - changes sequence length
Roll tool - figure 8 looking - changes the edit point in the timeline. It edits between two clips by lengthening one and shortening the other - double screen appears in canvas to help you find exact point. Sequence length stays the same
Slide - circles next to each other with top line attaching them - Keeps the length of the clip the same, but adjusts the in and out points. Canvas has split screen to show the in and out points
Slip - Circles with arcs on both sides - adjusts individual clip and adds/subtracts from the clips on either side
Get to work!
**Don't forget after school editing today! By 4:30, we should have close to finished projects to screen tomorrow! Yay! **
12/14/10

Aim: Finishing and screening final cuts
HW: For Monday, you will submit a ONE PAGE reflection on your editing project, what went well, what did you have trouble with, what did you learn, what are you proudest of etc.
In addition, you will submit a peer evaluation on yourself and your crew members.
Today, you will have time to complete your editing. If you are finished editing, we will screen a film so those editing, sit towards the back of the room and those finished, huddle around the screen. Editors, please use headphones.
Thanks!
**You may receive one comp ticket to one day of the winter concert because your work is exhibited, however, you must purchase at least one adult ticket in order to receive the comp ticket.**
