Why is the computer keyboard arranged with the letters all jumbled up?

Look at the "Q" on your keyboard and read the letters all the way to "Y." The most common type of keyboard in use today is the QWERTY keyboard. When this keyboard was designed, people typed on manual typewriters. The key would manually strike the paper, imprinting the letter the typist had indicated. A major problem with typing was that the keys would jam together, making it difficult to produce a document. Christopher Scholes studied which keys were used most frequently and he designed a keyboard layout where those keys were at a distance from one another. Thus, in 1868 the QWERTY keyboard was born.
