Lemonade Stand Project
Lemonade Stand Timeline and Directions
Project TimelineStep 1 – Student teams to collect data from Lemonade Stand Website from February 27th to March 1st in class or home. http://www.bconnex.net/~kidworld/java/lemonade/lemonade.htm
Step 2 – Gather data for analysis on spreadsheet provided. Spreadsheet due not later than Friday, March 2d. http://s3.amazonaws.com/engrade-myfiles/4008695972161561/Lemonade_Stand_Project_Data_Collection_S.xls
Step 3 – We will work on your reports and presentations each Wednesday.
Step 4 – Report written in Microsoft Word document will be due Friday, March 9th and PowerPoint presentation due Friday, March 16th.
Step 5 – Oral presentations March 19th – 23d.
Data Collection
You will collect data from Lemonade Stand website, extract data from data sheet then compare the following:
Create a sheet under a separate tab for each comparison then graph the data set for each of your comparisons.
Day of business versus end of day profits. (Sort & graph data.)
Temperature versus end of day profits. (Sort & graph data.)
Recipe change versus end of day profits. (Sort & graph data.)
Create a graph for each of your comparisons.
You will insert data tables and graphs into your report and PowerPoint.
Written Report
You will use your data collected in your final reflection/essay. You should use mathematical and business terms, and draw conclusions from reviewing your data. Please answer each question in three to five sentences, giving a full explanation.
Report will be completed in MLA format. Font type will be no larger than 12 point Times New Roman or Arial.
To develop your hypothesis, state your expectations or possible results in your introduction. Questions to ask yourself as you develop your essay outline might be as follows: How do customers react to my product when weather conditions change? What happens to customer satisfaction when I change my recipie or price? What do I expect to happen when I change certain things such as the recipie or price?
Questions to answer as you analyze the data and to help develop your report:
What trends did you identify from your data?
What did you do when the weather became hot and humid?
Because of your decisions, did sales increase or decrease?
How would customers normally react to your product, given the conditions ?
Use Excel and a graph to show your results.
What did you do to your recipe when the weather was too cold?
Because of your decisions, did sales increase or decrease?
How would customers normally react to your product, given the conditions ?
Use Excel and a graph to show your results.
How did you change your recipe when customers complained of taste?
Because of your decisions, did sales increase or decrease?
How would customers normally react to your product, given the conditions ?
Use Excel and a graph to show your results.
What other outside factors affected your results?
Because of your decisions, did sales increase or decrease?

To develop your conclusion, review and report if the results of the project met your expectations in the hypothsis as stated in your introduction. Please discuss and be thoughtful in your response.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/engrade-myfiles/4070619009896938/Lemonade_Stand_PowerPoint_Exemplar.pptUnderstanding of the Game
HOW TO BEST PLAY THE GAME:You will be placed in groups of four (4) students. It is best to delegate the tasks in each step of the Lemonade Stand Data Collection process based on a student’s desires and skills. We will begin with running the actual game then discussing the data entry onto the spreadsheet.
There are five (5) major variables in the game.
Pricing
Recipe
Inventory
Customers
Weather
All five of these variables can affect your profit (score, measurement). The following advice is given to assist you in the decision making process.
Pricing is important in many ways. It is the score card along with customer satisfaction. You may ask how you might price a product. The default price for a cup of your delicious and refreshing lemonade is $0.25 per cup. You may raise and lower the price as you wish, but do it in an informed educated way so you can maximize you profits and become more successful as you play the game.
On warm or hot days you may want to increase your product five (5) to ten (10) cents higher due to two factors. First, there will be a greater demand for a cool, refreshing drink and you have just the thing…LEMONADE!!! Second, to keep it cool, you will need to buy more ice and since it is hot, the ice melts, diluting the drink. Keep it fresh, sweet, crisp and delicious by increasing the amount of lemons and sugar. This increases your costs so you must cover them and still earn a profit. Gotta pay the bills and bring home the bacon!!
Recipe is important as well. Customers will let you know when they like something and really let you and everyone else know when things are not to their satisfaction. As stated before, you must adapt your recipe given temperature conditions. If is hot you must increase the amount of ice lemons and sugar when it cools down you must reduce the amount used as well. The default amount for this game is 4 lemons per pitcher, 4 cups of sugar per pitcher, and 4 ice cubes per cup. When it is warm, you will need more ice so increase it to five (5) or six (6) cubes per cup. You may increase the sugar by the same ratio as well for the reasons previously discussed. When it gets cooler, you may want to decrease the amount of ice as drinking a cool beverage at 55 degrees Fahrenheit may cause customers to become chilly, thereby reducing satisfaction and turning potential customers into paying customers. You would also waste inventory of unsold product for which you already paid.
An appropriate amount of inventory, or items to be processed and resold, on hand is vital to the success of your business. If you do not have enough when you start you business day, you may sell out and must close for the day, losing potential profits. Ensure you have enough cups, lemons sugar and ice on hand to make it through the day, yet not much more as lemons and sugar do go bad and ice melts.
Customers are the lifeblood of any business. Your lemonade stand is no exception. Sell them a delicious cup of your lemonade and they will sing your praises to all. Sell them something less than their expectations, then expect their ire directed at you and telling others, reducing your paying customers from the potential customers. After a few rounds, you will get to know their likes and dislikes and market you product to them.
Weather will affect your business as it affects anyone else. You cannot control it but you can control how your business will operate in it. Bottom line … you must sell lemonade on order to make a living. You must adjust how your product is positioned to take advantage of the situation. Adjusting the recipe and price as stated before can help you take advantage of these situations and still make a profit.
