Level of Thinking: Knowledge
Essential Vocabulary: private identity information, personal information, identity theft

Why is this important to learn?

You need to protect your identity online for 2 reasons.

1) Safety is the first reason. You don’t want anyone to track you down and hurt you.

2) Identity theft is the second reason. You don't want to have to pay for the identity thief's crimes or credit card bills. There is a higher chance of your identity getting stolen than of you being attacked.

Identity theft

Identity Theft: when your private information is stolen and can be used to get a driver’s license or credit cards.

Consequences: The thief could be arrested for something else and since they are using your name, it goes on your record. They can also run up large credit card bills in your name and you could be left to pay it.

Private Identity Information

Private Identity Information: Information that can be used to track you down or steal your identity. This information is not safe to give out.

first and last name
address

Personal Information

Personal Information: Information about you that can’t be used to track you down. This information is safe to give out online.
Examples:
your gender
your favorite band
your favorite food
how many pets you have
your opinion on an important issue
your favorite TV show
your favorite sports
your favorite video games
your first name alone

3) Label it private if someone can track you or steal your identity.
4) Label it personal if you can't be tracked.
