Practical Exam - Unprepared Tests

Unprepared Tests

In your Junior Cert Music Practical you are required to do an unprepared test.

What does this mean?
This means that you have not prepared the specific test . You will hear it or see it for the first time in your exam. But it does means that you must prepare and practice the skills involved in correctly performing the test!

Choices
You have to choose one of the following:
(a) Sightreading (instrument)
(b) Sightsinging (voice)
(c) Aural memory rhythm (clapping back)
(d) Aural memory melody (singing back)
(e) Improvisation

You can do the test on a different instrument from the one you have used to play your pieces.

Sightreading (Instrument) and Sightsinging (Voice)

Go to the class calender and you will find that I have uploaded examples. Alternatively you will find the same examples at this website.

Scroll through the document to find your instrument and practice the examples given. The standard of sightreading is about Grade 2.

If you have done London College, R.I.A.M. or Associated Board Exams in the past, you will be familiar with this test and you will know if it is your best option

Aural Memory Rhythm - Clap Back

In this test, the examiner will play a 4 bar rhythm TWICE on CD.

You will then clap back this rhythm.

The examiner will play the track ONE MORE TIME and you get another chance.

The examiner decides which was your best attempt and gives the marks for that attempt.

Listen to the examples on the calendar and practice them at home.

Aural Memory Melody - Sing Back

In this test, the examiner will play a 4 bar melody TWICE on CD.

You will then sing back this melody.

The examiner will play the track ONE MORE TIME and you get another chance.

The examiner decides which was your best attempt and gives the marks for that attempt.

Listen to the examples on the calendar and practice them at home.

Improvisation

This test should not be attempted unless you are an experienced improviser and have played lots of jazz!
