Scientific Method

Step by step guide

Scientific Method
1. Question:
The question to be answered by the lab.
Usually comes from an observation.
Must be something you can measure and an open ended question. For Example: “how does….affect…?” or “ How does ..Iv.. affect…DV”

2. Purpose
Action taken to answer the question.
“To measure, To determine, To find..”
3. Hypothesis
Should be based on knowledge and research.
The hypothesis must make a claim about how two factors rekate. It must be written using the << If …then…>> format.
“If (I do this) Then (this will happen)”
4. Procedure
Anybody should be able to read your procedure and repeat the exact same experiment. It’s a detailed recipe!
Must be numbered and listed in a column (point form)
5. Materials list
Must be in a list format.
Using the correct scientific terminology
Specific and detailed list all of all materials being used.

6. Experiment
Perform your experiment.
Record your results in the results table- make sur to inclyde the units
Identify the IV (The variable you are testing/changing)
Identify the DV (The variable that is being observed for results, the one we measure, the data we collect)
Constant: Factors that are not changed during the experiment

7. Results
Record your results in a table, chart, graph.
IV and DV should be used as headings
Must have a title and done with a ruler
Units

8. Conclusion
a. Repeat the hypothesis and explain what you were expecting
b. Indicate the actual results
c. Meaning of results (explain what the data is telling you)
d. Reject or accept your hypothesis
e. List possible sources of error
Format:
a. Pencil only
b. Neat
c. Organized with titles
d. Grammar and spelling
e. Ruler
f. Name and group clearly indicated
g. Lab title
