Creating an Engrade Wiki

What is an Engrade Wiki?

An Engrade wiki is the easiest way for teachers to share educational information with students and fellow teachers. Each wiki is a web-based document that can contain formatted text, links, images, YouTube videos, and Engrade Flashcards. This page itself is an Engrade wiki.

Use Engrade Wikis to make:
o Student study guides & notes
o Class websites
o Class syllabi
o Lesson plans
o Full textbooks

Your wikis will be online, available to students 24/7, and sharable with teachers around the world.

Creating a New Wikis

To make a wiki:
1. First, login or signup for Engrade.
2. Hover you mouse over Apps
3. Click on Wikis
4. Click Create New Wiki on the left.

There you can enter the basic information for your wiki such as name and description. Please make this information as specific as possible in order to help other teachers find your lessons in the directory.

You will also choose a Wiki ID which will be part of your wiki's public URL:
http://wikis.engrade.com/{wiki ID}

Adding a New Section

Each page of your wiki will be divided into sections. Each section will have a title and a body (this gray bar above and this text is one section on this wiki page). To add the first section to your wiki, click the Add New Section button. There you can choose which type of section to add:

Text - where you can enter text or ETML
Image - upload or select a previously uploaded image in your account to display
Video - enter the URL of a YouTube or Vimeo video to display
Flashcards - enter the URL of Engrade Flashcards to display

Once you've added a section you'll notice that when you hover your mouse over it, several links will appear in the upper right. Use the links to edit that section:

Edit Click this to edit the content of that section
Delete Click this to delete the entire section from the page
Up Click this to move the section above the previous section on the page
Down Click this to move the section below the next section on the page

Note that if you're displaying your wiki to others (for example, projecting it during class) you may wish to hide all of the editing buttons. To do this, simply click the Toggle Editing link in the upper right corner of the page. This will hide editing links on all page on all of your wikis until you click that link again.

Tips for Making Amazing Wikis

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when creating Wikis:

1. Use the sections. Entering information via multiple sections (instead of one big section) allows students to more easily process each section as a small piece of information, before moving on. Doing this also allows students to quickly jump to the specific section they're looking for.

2. Add video. There are many great education videos on YouTube and Vimeo that can assist in your wiki, adding one to your wiki can really help hold students' attention.

3. Add flashcards at the end of your wiki. Engrade Flashcards are not only flashcards, but also have built-in matching and multiple choice tests. Adding flashcards allows students to give themselves a mini review quiz to make sure they've understood the wiki.
