Covalent Bonding

Standards:

C.7.2. Predict and explain how atoms combine to form molecules by sharing electrons to form covalent or metallic bonds, or by transferring electrons to form ionic bonds.
C.7.5. Demonstrate and explain that chemical bonds between identical atoms in molecules such as H2, O2, CH4, NH3, C2H4, N2, H2O, and many large biological molecules tend to be covalent; some of these molecules may have hydrogen bonds between them.
C.2.7. Classify substances as ionic or molecular .... using formulas and laboratory investigations.

Essential Questions:

How could you differentiate between ionic bond nad covalent bond?
What is Coulomb's law?
What is causal relationship of electronegativity and covalent bonding?

Warm-Up:

01. define key terms:
metallic bond; ionic bond; biological molecules; molecular formula
02. Molar mass and naming ionic compounds

Concept Introduction:

01. Audiovisual of Organic compounds: Module 8
Viewing Guide.
02. Modeling Repulsive and Attractive forces (Coulomb's Law)

Guided Practice:

HOLT Chemistry:
Section Review 1: page 198; 1 - 14

Independent Practice:

01. Chapter Review: page 216; 1 - 3; 7

Electronegativity and Ionization Energy

Refer to Figur 6: Electronegativities; page 194:
01. Make a list ranking the electronegativity of the elements from highest to lowest from Period 1 to Period 4.
02. Write the name of each element.
03. Refere to Ionization Energy, Figure 17; page 134 and Figure 6, Electronegativity; page 194.
Write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting these two properties. Please include reasons why ionization energy and electronegativity might show the same periodic trends.

Graphing Skills:

Use Table 2; page 196 to graph electronegativity difference versus bond energy of the hydrogen-halides.
Explain the relationship between electronegativity difference and bond energy as interpreted from the graph.

Vocabulary:

Define the Key terms on page 199 (HOLT)
Write a paragraph about what the section is about, and compare your work with a partner.
