5 Paragraph Essay: Step 5: Body Paragraphs

You Need Body Paragraphs

Body paragraphs are easy. You will write three of them. You just copy down what you put in the tree map. Watch your essay grow up.

Do you know what sentences go in a body paragraph?
Body: Topic, Detail, Detail, Detail (Because they don't do dinner)

So each body paragraph needs:
A topic sentence (to tell the reader what the paragraph is about)
3 supporting detail sentences (to prove your topic)

How to make a Body Paragraph

Do you know how to turn a topic #1 on this tree map into a topic sentence?

Just relate topic #1 to the thesis. Can you do that?

Topic #1: He made slavery illegal.
Thesis: Abraham Lincoln is a special person to study.

= Topic Sentence: The first reason why Abraham Lincoln is special is because he made slavery illegal.

More Examples:
=Topic Sentence: Abraham Lincoln is a special person to study because he made slavery illegal.
=Topic Sentence: The first reason why Abraham Lincoln is important to study is because he made slavery illegal.
=Topic Sentence: Abraham Lincoln changed history by freeing the slaves.

Non-examples (these are bad examples):
He freed slaves. (needs a connection to your thesis, Abe Lincoln)
Abraham Lincoln is special to study. (needs a connection to the topic sentence, making slavery illegal)
First, the slaves. (needs a connection to your thesis, Abe Lincoln)

I have a topic sentence for a body paragraph, now what?

Next go your three details from the tree map under that topic. Each detail will become one complete sentence.

Topic sentence: The first reason why Abraham Lincoln is important to study is because he made slavery illegal.
Detail 1: Black Slaves from Africa were kept on plantations in the South.
Detail 2: As President, Abraham Lincoln used his power to sign a law which declared slavery to be illegal.
Detail 3: Ever since that day, the black slaves in the South were set free.

After the topic sentence

See here it is copied down from my tree map:

Topic: The first reason why Abraham Lincoln is important to study is because he made slavery illegal. Detail 1: Black Slaves from Africa were kept on plantations in the South. Detail 2: As President, Abraham Lincoln used his power to sign a law which declared slavery to be illegal. Detail 3: Ever since that day, the black slaves in the South were set free.

It goes right after the introduction paragraph, so this is what my essay looks like so far:

Who is a special person to study? In America, there is are many presidents, but there is only one who stands out from all the rest. He saved america during a Great Civil War. Abe Lincoln is a special person to study

The first reason why Abraham Lincoln is important to study is because he made slavery illegal. Black Slaves from Africa were kept on plantations in the South. As President, Abraham Lincoln used his power to sign a law which declared slavery to be illegal. Ever since that day, the black slaves in the South were set free.

Great! Now I will just write two more body paragraphs to make three total!

When you are done, head to step 6 to make your conclusion, or go back to the 5-paragraph essay overview.

More Topic Sentence Examples

Topic Sentence: Before I came to Lorin Griset Academy, I thought I was going to hate it.
Topic Sentence: My first day of school at Lorin Griset Academy was surprising.
Topic Sentence: Now that I have been at Lorin Griset Academy for a few months, I have decided it is a good school.

Bad examples:
Bad Topic Sentence: Before I came. (Needs a connection to your thesis)
Bad Topic Sentence: Lorin Griset was surprising. (Too short.)
Bad Topic Sentence: Next what happened. (Needs a connection to the topic and the thesis!)
