Lesson on Plurals

In English there is only one article "the." In Spanish nouns are separated into "feminine" and "masculine" and the articles "el" for masculine and "la" for feminine are used.

Generally nouns that end in "-a" in Spanish are "feminine"
example: la mesa

Generally nouns that end in "-o" or a consonant in Spanish are "masculine"
example: el libro

There are some exceptions!! That is why it is important to memorize the Spanish word with it's article as opposed to just the word.
example: memorize el lápiz instead of lápiz

mapa is one of those exceptions

We want to think it is feminine because it ends in "-a", but mapa is indeed a masculine word

el mapa

In this class the vocabulary will have it's article and you can see the vocabulary for this unit. I have included the articles. I still want you to be familiar with feminine and masculine nouns because it is VERY IMPORTANT!

Words ALWAYS HAVE TO AGREE IN GENDER AND IN NUMBER.

If a noun is feminine and singular the article has to be feminine and singular.

ARTICLES: (definite)

singular feminine la
plural feminine las

singular masculine el
plural masculine los

MAKING WORDS PLURAL:

If a noun ends in a vowel just add "-s" libro ---> libros

If a noun ends in a consonant add "-es" reloj ----> relojes

If a noun ends in a z, change the z to a c and then add "-es" lápiz ----> lapices

NOW INCLUDE THE ARTICLE

el libro ------> los libros

el reloj -----> los relojes

el lápiz ----> los lapices

la mesa -----> las mesas

la silla ----> las sillas</i>
