Essay Template

This template is a basic guide to writing an essay.

Note: Essay examiners and composition teachers do not always agree on what makes a good essay, so be sure you are following the instructions of the teacher who assigned your essay.

This essay example demonstrates only three paragraphs and three supporting points per body paragraph, but your essay may include many more paragraphs. You may wish to summarize your points or indicate a closing to each different group of ideas in the last paragraph line.

You should also try and make sure that each paragraph is linked in some way, either by the flow of ideas or a transition of some kind. (See page 50-51 in your text for a list of transition words.)

Remember, don't introduce any new ideas in the conclusion and provide a strong ending to your essay!

INTRODUCTION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rephrase the essay question using your opinion. Include three ideas/points that support your opinion and will be covered in your essay. The final sentence of the introduction should contain your thesis statement – a sentence (or two) that describes the focus of your ENTIRE essay subject. If you write a good introduction, the rest of the essay is easy!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BODY PARAGRAPH 1
‘In the first place’ or ‘To begin with’ or ‘Firstly’ state your main idea/subject/topic in the first sentence of your first body paragraph.
Fact 1

Comment/further information about supporting fact 1.

Fact 2

Comment/further information about supporting fact 2.

Fact 3

Comment/further information about supporting fact 3.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BODY PARAGRAPH 2
‘In the second place’ or ‘Secondly’ state your second main idea/subject/topic in the first sentence.
Fact 1

Comment/further information about fact 1.

Fact 2

Comment/further information about fact 2.

Etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BODY PARAGRAPH 3
‘Finally’ or ‘Lastly’ state your third main idea/subject/topic in the first sentence.

Fact 1

Comment/further information about fact 1.

Fact 2

Comment/further information about fact 2.

Etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSION
‘In conclusion’ or ‘Therefore’ or ‘As a result’
Conclude your essay by rephrasing the introduction including your "proof" or "results."

The introduction should introduce the ideas presented in the body. The conclusion should summarise the ideas presented in the body making them very similar.

Try to find a "clincher" statement for the last sentence to match the "catchy" hook you used in the intro.
